What Does Your Speech Reveal About You?

Our words function like a spiritual thermometer: they reveal what fills, shapes, and governs the heart.

A biblical reflection on how our words reveal the heart and provide insight into our spiritual condition.

Just as a thermometer helps us monitor our physical health, our words reveal the heart and provide an important diagnosis of our spiritual condition.

A thermometer alerts us when something may be wrong with the body. In a similar way, we possess a natural indicator that can help us evaluate the condition of the soul: the way we communicate.

Indeed, the words that come out in everyday life reveal something about what is happening within us. Through our speech, we often display both our moral maturity and our true spiritual condition.

Therefore, paying attention to our words is not a superficial exercise. On the contrary, our speech can help us recognize what is taking place in a much deeper place: the heart.

The Bible Shows That Our Words Reveal the Heart

The Bible gives great importance to the way we use our words. Moreover, Jesus establishes a direct connection between what exists within us and what eventually comes out of our mouths.

“For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” Matthew 12:34

In other words, our words are not isolated events. Instead, they reveal something about the source from which they come. As a result, our speech becomes a kind of window into what rules the inner life.

Jesus also warns us about the seriousness of our words. Therefore, the way Christians speak should never be treated as an insignificant part of the Christian life.

The Tongue and Spiritual Maturity

Psalms, Proverbs, and James repeatedly reinforce this truth. While careless speech can destroy, wise words can bring encouragement, deliverance, and edification.

James goes so far as to say that if someone considers himself religious but does not bridle his tongue, his religion is worthless. Thus, the way we use our words is closely connected to spiritual maturity.

Careless Speech

Words Can Wound

Anger, slander, malicious speech, and gossip can turn the tongue into an instrument of destruction.

Wisdom

Words Can Build Up

On the other hand, speech guided by wisdom can encourage, guide, comfort, and promote what is good.

What Is the Spiritual Temperature of Your Speech?

In light of this truth, it is worth asking a personal question: what does the way you use your mouth reveal about your “spiritual temperature”?

A Question for Reflection

If someone listened to your conversations for an entire week, what would they discover about what dominates your heart?

Sometimes the problem is obvious. For example, the tongue can be used to wound, slander, curse, or spread gossip.

However, the diagnosis does not end with openly malicious speech. Often, the condition of the heart becomes visible in more subtle ways, especially through the subjects that continually dominate our everyday conversations.

What Do We Talk About Most?

For example, constant complaining may reveal discontent. Likewise, repeatedly speaking about our own achievements may expose pride or a desire for recognition.

In addition, our conversations can reveal worries, resentments, desires, and priorities that we may not immediately recognize.

Therefore, listening carefully to our own speech can become a valuable exercise in self-examination before God.

How to Use Your Words to Build Others Up

Ultimately, our speech reflects what dominates our inner life. Therefore, caring for our words also requires us to care about the condition of our hearts.

Nevertheless, this reflection must move beyond observation and reach everyday life. Two simple practices can help us examine our speech more carefully.

01

Before You Speak, Think About Edification

Before responding, commenting, or sharing something, ask yourself: “Will my words build up the person who is listening?” This brief pause can prevent careless speech and encourage greater wisdom in our conversations.

02

Examine the Subjects of Your Conversations

Take time during the day to notice what you talk about. What do you complain about most? What do you boast about? Which subjects continually return to your conversations? After all, these patterns may reveal what occupies your heart.

The Goal Is Not Simply to Speak Less

The biblical goal is not merely silence or better manners. Rather, we need transformed hearts that produce words consistent with the will of God.

Consequently, true care for the tongue begins within. As God works in our hearts, our words should increasingly display the fruit of that transformation.

A Prayer for Our Hearts and Our Words

May Our Words Be Pleasing to the Lord

If our words reveal the heart, then every conversation can become an opportunity to examine our lives before God.

Therefore, we should not only consider what we say. We should also ask where those words are coming from. After all, the change we need is not merely a change in vocabulary; it is a transformation of the heart.

Moreover, our words can cease to be instruments of destruction and become means of grace, encouragement, wisdom, and edification for the people around us.

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14

May this also be our prayer: that God would examine our hearts, govern our thoughts, and give us wisdom so that our words increasingly reflect the grace of Christ.

In Christ’s love,
